What Is a Lab Order?
A lab order (sometimes called a lab requisition) is a written authorization from a licensed healthcare provider that specifies which tests should be run on your sample. Labs are required to have this authorization on file before they can process most testing.
When You'll Need One
- Provider-ordered testing. If your doctor, nurse practitioner, or specialist wants specific bloodwork done, they'll typically send or hand you a lab order.
- Routine monitoring. Tests tied to an existing diagnosis or medication (like A1C checks or cholesterol panels) almost always require a standing order.
- Insurance-billed testing. If you want your insurance to cover the cost, an order from your provider is generally required for the claim to process.
When You May Not Need One
Some direct-access lab tests can be ordered without a physician visit, depending on the test and your state's regulations. If you're unsure whether your desired test requires a provider order, our team can help you check before your appointment.
How to Get Your Order to Us
Once you have your lab order in hand — whether it's a PDF from your provider's portal, a photo of a paper requisition, or an email from your doctor's office — simply attach it during checkout using the "Attach Lab Order" upload field on the booking page. Our technician will confirm it before your visit so there are no surprises on collection day.
